Energy storage and grid modernization
South Korea’s government is planning for 100MW of battery storage as part of a nearly 3GW hub of solar PV and wind on reclaimed land in Saemangeum. A microgrid energy management system is to be imposed, which enables independent generation, storage, and supply of electricity. The management system measures and processes data from new renewable energy facilities to make efficient energy operation. Microgrid energy management system centers are to be constructed to establish an active distribution network operation system which optimizes energy use. It is the job of civil engineers to ensure that the battery storages are well-supported, and that the management system centers are safely built and durable.
